Children’s Orthodontics

Children’s orthodontic treatment—its cost and where to get quality care—are top concerns for many parents whose children have misaligned or uneven teeth. These issues can make children feel less confident in communication and affect their daily activities. With over 10 years of experience and hundreds of successful orthodontic cases for children, Phuong Thanh Dental Clinic aims to share useful knowledge to help parents understand the process and feel confident in starting their child’s orthodontic journey, so they can soon regain a healthy, beautiful smile.

When Is the Right Time for Children to Get Orthodontic Treatment?

Ages 5–11: This is the ideal age range for orthodontic evaluation and oral health screening for children (according to the American Dental Association – ADA).

Oral screenings help detect early dental abnormalities such as extra teeth, missing teeth, insufficient space for tooth eruption, narrow arches, excessive or insufficient jaw development, and harmful habits like lip sucking or tongue thrusting.

During this stage, children are transitioning from primary (baby) teeth to permanent teeth. The teeth and jawbones are still developing, making them easier to guide and correct—especially jaw alignment.

Early intervention during this stage helps prevent and correct harmful habits that affect oral health, reduces the need for tooth extractions, and helps avoid jaw surgery later in life if severe misalignment develops.

Indications for orthodontic treatment in children

Parents should take their child to see an orthodontist if they notice any of the following conditions:

  • Spacing between teeth; large gaps between teeth.

  • Crowded or irregularly aligned teeth.

  • Protruding teeth (overjet), where the upper front teeth and upper lip protrude significantly.

  • Underbite, where the lower front teeth extend in front of the upper front teeth, and the upper teeth are not visible when smiling.

  • Deep bite, where only the upper teeth are visible when the child smiles.

  • Crossbite, where one or more teeth are not in the correct biting position.

  • Open bite, where the upper and lower jaws do not meet and remain apart.

Orthodontic Treatment for Children at the Right Time

Orthodontic treatment for children helps correct misalignments of the teeth and jaw, guiding them into the proper position. As a result, children gain greater confidence with straight, beautiful teeth and a well-aligned bite.

Timely orthodontic treatment for children allows dentists to more easily correct jaw misalignments and guide the teeth into their proper positions on the dental arch, making the process more effective, faster, and more comfortable with minimal discomfort.

Early orthodontic treatment, when the jawbones are still developing, helps the upper and lower jaws return to their natural, physiological alignment more quickly, thereby shortening treatment time. Children can achieve straight, beautiful teeth, a well-balanced mouth, and overall facial harmony.

When children receive orthodontic treatment from highly qualified and experienced specialists, with appropriately selected techniques, the results can be maintained long term, helping to prevent the need for re-treatment in adulthood.

Having straight teeth and a properly aligned bite after orthodontic treatment makes oral hygiene easier for children, thereby helping prevent uncomfortable oral health problems and boosting their confidence in communication.

How Long Does Orthodontic Treatment Take for Children?

For children, orthodontic treatment is typically divided into two stages: the jaw correction stage and the comprehensive orthodontic (finishing) stage.

* Jaw Correction Stage

This stage focuses on correcting jaw deformities such as protrusion (overbite), underbite, and narrow arches.

  • Treatment age: 5–11 years old

  • Duration: 12–24 months

Depending on the specific condition, the dentist will prescribe specialized appliances, either fixed or removable, such as Facemask, Twin Block, Quad Helix, etc.

Notes:

  • During this period, children are transitioning from primary (baby) teeth to permanent teeth, and the jawbones are still developing, making them easier to guide and correct.

  • Early intervention at this stage helps harmonize the relationship between the upper and lower jaws, reducing the need for tooth extractions or jaw surgery later in life.

  • If this stage is missed, the effectiveness of correcting jaw deformities is often limited or minimal.

  • After the jaw correction stage, the dentist will monitor the child’s tooth replacement and permanent tooth eruption every 3–6 months until the child enters the comprehensive orthodontic stage.

* Comprehensive Orthodontic (Finishing) Stage

Once the transition to permanent teeth is nearly complete, the dentist will align misaligned teeth into their proper positions on the dental arch using clear aligners or braces.

Orthodontic Treatment Methods

Currently, Phuong Thanh Dental Clinic offers three orthodontic methods for children. After an examination, depending on the child’s dental and jaw misalignment, the dentist will advise and explain to parents the most suitable orthodontic option for their child.

Advice for Parents When Taking Their Child to a Pediatric Dental Clinic for the First Time

Below are some tips parents can refer to in order to help their child cooperate better throughout their oral care journey:

Before Treatment

  • + Take your child for their first dental check-up when they are around 3 years old.
  • + Read storybooks or listen to audiobooks about dental visits to help your child visualize the experience. Children often remember details from books, such as play areas, dental chairs, the instruments dentists use, X-rays, or cavity treatment. Knowing what to expect can help them feel more comfortable and confident when visiting the dental clinic.
  • + Talk to your child before the dental appointment to prepare them mentally.
  • + Avoid forcing your child. The first visit can simply be a tour of the clinic without any immediate treatment.
  • + Talk with your child and explain why treatment is necessary if they need procedures such as dental fillings.

After Treatment

  • + Help your child maintain emotional balance during orthodontic treatment. Parents and dentists should accompany, communicate with, and explain to the child the purpose of orthodontic care and the long-term benefits it will bring. Parents should also praise their child whenever they wear their orthodontic appliances on time and show good self-discipline.
  • + Provide soft, mashed foods such as porridge, soup, oatmeal, etc., to help minimize discomfort after fillings, extractions, or orthodontic treatment. For desserts, parents can choose options like bananas, yogurt, cheese, and fruit juice to ensure adequate intake of essential vitamins and minerals.
  • + Avoid giving children hard foods (hard candies, nuts, seeds), sticky foods (chewing gum, gummy candies), and foods or drinks that may stain teeth (soft drinks, caramel, etc.).
  • + Instruct your child to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing regularly with a soft-bristled toothbrush, and to brush gently around the braces to prevent brackets from coming loose. Parents may also encourage the use of dental floss and mouthwash to remove plaque and food debris from between the teeth.

You can book an appointment online with Phuong Thanh Dental Clinic through the following platforms: our Website, Facebook, Zalo OA, and TikTok.

You should visit the dental clinic for a routine check-up every 6 months. This helps maintain good oral hygiene and allows early detection of dental problems or early-stage oral lesions.

In fact, orthodontic treatment is not only for adults. According to dental experts, ages 6–10 are considered the “golden period” for orthodontic evaluation and early intervention. Early check-ups help detect and correct bite misalignments, allowing a child’s facial structure to develop more harmoniously.

Porcelain veneers may be recommended in the following cases:

Severely discolored front teeth that cannot be whitened

Old fillings that have changed color

Teeth with worn edges, cracks, or chips

Uneven, damaged adjacent teeth or front teeth

Gaps, short teeth, mild misalignment, or spacing that is not too large

Butterfly-shaped front teeth

Dental implant placement is generally not painful, as local anesthesia is used during the procedure. After the anesthesia wears off, the dentist will prescribe pain relief and medications to support healing. Each implant placement typically takes about 15 minutes per implant post.

The lifespan of porcelain crowns depends on several factors:

Material: All-ceramic crowns are usually more durable than metal-ceramic crowns.

Technique: A skilled dentist ensures proper fit and strong bonding.

Care: Proper oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups help extend the lifespan of crowns.

There are two common types of porcelain crowns: metal-ceramic crowns and all-ceramic crowns.

Metal-ceramic crowns: Over time, the outer porcelain layer may wear down from chewing. The metal core can oxidize and become visible, causing dark gum lines.

All-ceramic crowns: This issue rarely occurs because there is no metal core, helping maintain a more natural appearance without dark gum lines.

If a tooth is broken or extracted, you should not delay tooth replacement—even if the cost is high or the missing tooth is not visible.

When a tooth is lost, adjacent teeth tend to shift into the empty space, making future tooth replacement more difficult. This movement can also affect jaw structure and eventually alter your facial appearance.

To prevent reduced effectiveness or complications from local anesthesia, you should avoid alcohol and beer for at least one day before treatment. You should also inform your dentist about any medications you are taking and any known drug allergies.

You can help prevent tooth decay by following these measures:

Visit the dental clinic for routine check-ups every 6 months.

Limit consumption of sweets, candies, sugary foods, and carbonated drinks. Rinse your mouth with mouthwash after consuming sweets or soft drinks. If mouthwash is not available, drink some water instead.

Avoid drinking soft drinks, fruit juices, or similar beverages before bedtime or after brushing your teeth. At night, saliva production decreases, allowing these drinks to erode tooth enamel. You should only drink plain water before bed.
