Does brushing harder clean your teeth better?

Dental researchers have shown that brushing harder does not clean teeth more effectively. On the contrary, brushing too forcefully can wear away tooth enamel—the outer protective layer of the teeth. Once enamel is worn down, it cannot regenerate, leading to increased tooth sensitivity, yellowing, and a higher risk of cavities.

Aggressive brushing can also damage the gums, causing gum tissue to recede and exposing the sensitive root surfaces of the teeth. Over time, this damage may result in permanent gum loss.

Proper toothbrushing is not about brushing hard or soft, but about using the correct technique. In addition, you should use a soft-bristled toothbrush and apply gentle pressure when brushing. If the bristles on your toothbrush quickly fray or splay out, that is a clear sign that you are brushing too hard.
